Sustainability — Komodo Diving Trip’s Environmental & Community Commitments

Sustainability & Community Impact

At Komodo Diving Trip, our business is intrinsically linked to the health and vitality of the Komodo National Park. We operate under the philosophy of ‘Menjaga Alam, Menjaga Masa Depan’ — Protecting Nature, Protecting the Future. This is not just a slogan; it is the guiding principle behind our daily operations. We believe that true luxury travel is regenerative, leaving a positive impact on the environment and the local communities we interact with. Our commitment to sustainability is a core pillar of our identity, influencing every decision we make, from vessel design to the partners we choose. Choosing a Komodo diving trip with us means investing in the long-term protection of this global treasure.

Environmental Stewardship

Our commitment to minimizing our ecological footprint and actively contributing to marine conservation is demonstrated through concrete, measurable actions.

  • Marine Conservation Partnerships: We provide both financial support and in-kind data collection for our official conservation partners, including The Nature Conservancy Indonesia and Manta Trust. Our PADI-certified guides, led by our on-staff marine biologist, contribute to citizen science by logging manta ray sightings and monitoring coral bleaching events.
  • Zero Single-Use Plastic Policy: We have completely eliminated single-use plastic bottles, straws, and bags from our operations. Guests are provided with personal reusable stainless-steel water bottles, and we use locally-made, refillable toiletries in all cabins.
  • Advanced Waste Management: Our phinisi yachts are equipped with modern wastewater treatment systems that far exceed government requirements, ensuring no blackwater is discharged into the sea. All solid waste is segregated onboard and properly disposed of and recycled in Labuan Bajo.
  • Carbon Footprint Reduction: We are actively working to reduce our carbon emissions. Our captains are trained in fuel-efficient navigation, and we maximize the use of our sails on our phinisi yachts whenever possible. Furthermore, we partner with the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve Project in Kalimantan to purchase verified carbon credits, offsetting the carbon footprint of every trip.
  • Reef-Safe Practices: We provide complimentary reef-safe sunscreen to all guests and enforce a strict no-touch, no-take, no-harassment policy for all marine life interactions, as per Komodo National Park and PADI guidelines.

Community Empowerment

We believe that sustainable tourism must deliver tangible benefits to the local population. Our goal is to be a valued partner for the communities of Flores and the surrounding islands.

  • Local Employment & Fair Wages: We are proud that over 85% of our crew—from our skilled captains and engineers to our talented chefs and housekeeping staff—are from local communities in and around Labuan Bajo. We provide competitive, above-average wages, comprehensive training, and enroll all staff in Indonesia’s national social security programs, BPJS Ketenagakerjaan and BPJS Kesehatan.
  • Local Sourcing & Supply Chain: We prioritize sourcing our provisions from local markets in Labuan Bajo. By purchasing fresh fish, fruits, vegetables, and spices directly from local producers, we ensure that a significant portion of our operational spending directly benefits the local economy.
  • Community Development Fund: A percentage of the revenue from every trip is allocated to our Community Development Fund. This fund supports educational initiatives in villages within the park, such as providing school supplies and funding English language classes to empower the next generation to participate in the tourism economy.
  • Preservation of Cultural Heritage: We actively promote local culture by showcasing and selling traditional ‘ikat’ weavings from Flores artisans onboard our vessels, providing a direct market for these skilled craftswomen.

Our commitment to sustainability is an ongoing journey of improvement and innovation. We are dedicated to ensuring that the magic of Komodo can be experienced for many generations to come.
